What It Is
The Allurion balloon arrives folded inside a capsule about the size of a large vitamin, attached to a thin fill tube. At your placement visit you swallow the capsule with water. Side Effects
Your stomach notices that a balloon showed up. Nausea, cramping, and some vomiting are common in the first three to five days, and you go home from placement with medications that control them. The real risks are uncommon and worth stating plainly. About 1 to 3 percent of patients cannot tolerate the balloon and have it removed early, a fraction of the intolerance rate of older endoscopic balloons. Early deflation is rare, and because the balloon is designed to pass through the digestive tract, a deflated balloon usually just leaves ahead of schedule. Rarely, one needs endoscopic removal.
